Abstract The seeds of Erythrina americana Mill. are consumed by the bruchid Specularius impressithorax. Hence to evaluate the effect that the beetles can have on the sedes, the percentage of damage to E. americana seeds in the pre-dispersal stage was determined, as well as the accumulated damage during one year caused by S. impressithorax. The germination percentage of healthy and damaged seeds were evaluated. The seeds were collected in the Tulancingo Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico in December 2017. 1,272 seeds had been collected from nine different trees, which remained at least 500 m away from each other. The number of holes were counted in the seeds, that is, the number of bruchids that emerged from each seed (n = 269). The average damage percentage during the pre-dispersal of the seeds was 17.4% and for the post-dispersal stage it was 83.1%. Seeds with a bruchid exit hole germinated in 66.6%. The undamaged seeds presented a germination percentage of 2.2%, because the E. americana seeds present dormancy. The percentage of germination of the seeds with an emergency hole caused by S. impressithorax (66.6%), indicates that when an E. americana seed is consumed by a bruchid, it does not damage the embryo, and emulates a natural scarification process.

Resumen Las semillas de Erythrina americana Mill., son consumidas por el brúquido Specularius impressithorax, por lo que para evaluar el efecto que pueden tener los escarabajos sobre las semillas se determinó el porcentaje de daño en semillas de E. americana en la etapa de pre-dispersión, así como el daño acumulado durante un año causado por S. impressithorax. Se evaluó el porcentaje de germinación de semillas sanas y dañadas. Las semillas se colectaron en el valle de Tulancingo, Hidalgo, México en diciembre de 2017. Se colectaron 1,272 semillas provenientes de nueve árboles diferentes, los cuales se encontraban como mínimo a 500 m de distancia uno de otro. A las semillas se les conto el número de orificios, es decir el número de brúquidos que emergieron de cada semilla (n = 269). El porcentaje de daño promedio durante la pre-dispersión de las semillas fue de 17.4 % y para la etapa post-dispersión fue de 83.1 %. Las semillas con un orificio de salida de un brúquido germinaron en un 66.6 %. Las semillas sin daño presentaron un porcentaje de germinación de 2.2 %, debido a que las semillas de E. americana presentan dormancia. El porcentaje de germinación de las semillas con un orificio de emergencia causado por S. impressithorax (66.6 %), indica que cuando una semilla de E. americana es consumida por un brúquido, éste no daña el embrión, y emula un proceso de escarificación natural.

Abstract Agricultural wastes are an environmental and economic problem that countries must strive to solve as soon as possible. White-rot fungi can take advantage of these wastes through an efficient process involving the bioconversion of lignocellulosic materials. Therefore, this work has used pine needles (Pinus pseudostrobus) and nutshells (Carya illinoinensis), relevant wastes in Mexico, as substrates for growing three fungal strains (Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes, and Pleurotus ostreatus) on PDA plates supplemented with these materials. Besides, the capacity to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes by these three fungi through solid-state fermentation has been evaluated using pine needles and nutshells along with barley straw. The relevant results suggest that nutshells are a potential substrate for growing G. lucidum (mycelial growth rate of 0.758 cm d-1). Albeit pine needles waste has allowed G. lucidum growth (0.402 cm d-1), L. edodes and P. ostreatus growth on PDA supplemented plates were not observed. Further to this, nutshells or pine needles combined with barley straw were used as substrates through solid-state fermentation to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes (cellulase, xylanase, and laccase). G. lucidum presented the highest cellulase productivity (3.03 ± 0.34 IU/gdm·d) using nutshells and barley straw (BS_NS) as substrates, while it was half using pine needles and barley straw (BS_PN) (1.35 ± 0.20 IU/gdm·d). The results were similar for xylanase productivity because G. lucidum produced 4.80 ± 0.61 IU/gdm·d using BS_PN, slightly higher than the BS_NS (3.79 ± 0.29 IU/gdm·). Finally, nutshells might be a suitable substrate for the growth of white-rot fungi, mainly the G. lucidum strain, making it an ecological alternative for future biotechnological applications.

Abstract Taxodium huegelii (synonym: Taxodium mucronatum) is a tree that inhabits gallery forests; its common names are ahuehuete, Tule tree, Montezuma cypress or sabino. The objective of this research was to generate current and potential distribution maps for the species in the state of Hidalgo. The 56 records, obtained from field collections and a database search were used to prepare them. Records were pre-analyzed to avoid provenance errors and repeated data. The documented distribution map was generated with ArcGIS® version 10.3 and the potential distribution map with Maxent version 3.4.1. The biogeographic provinces (Zacatecan-Potosin) Southern Highlands, Eastern Sierra Madre, and the Gulf of Mexico were the only ones with records of presence, located in 23 of the 84 municipalities of Hidalgo; however, according to the results, there is 46 % suitability for the species to be distributed in 63 municipalities in the state. The potential distribution model is satisfactory, as it has a prediction of 92 %. The distribution of T. huegelii is favored in areas where the minimum temperature of the coldest month is not less than 3 °C, and in places with a precipitation range of 100 to 500 mm. The actual and potential distribution maps generated constitute the basis for future research on this emblematic taxon of Mexico.

Resumen Taxodium huegelii (sinónimo: Taxodium mucronatum) es un árbol que habita en bosques de galería; sus nombres comunes son ahuehuete, árbol de Tule, ciprés de Montezuma o sabino. El objetivo de esta investigación fue generar mapas de distribución actual y potencial para la especie en el estado de Hidalgo. Para elaborarlos se emplearon 56 registros, obtenidos de colectas en campo y una búsqueda en bases de datos. Los registros se analizaron previamente para evitar errores de procedencia y datos repetidos. El mapa de distribución documentada se generó con ArcGIS ® versión 10.3 y el mapa de distribución potencial mediante Maxent versión 3.4.1. Las provincias biogeográficas Altiplano Sur (Zacatecano-Potosino), Sierra Madre Oriental y el Golfo de México fueron las únicas que tuvieron registros de presencia, los cuales se localizaron en 23 de los 84 municipios de Hidalgo; sin embargo, de acuerdo con los resultados, existe 46 % de idoneidad para que la especie se distribuya en 63 municipios del estado. El modelo de distribución potencial es satisfactorio, ya que tiene una predicción de 92 %. La distribución de T. huegelii se favorece en zonas donde la temperatura mínima del mes más frío no es menor a 3 °C, y en lugares con un intervalo de precipitación de 100 a 500 mm. Los mapas de distribución real y potencial generados constituyen la base para futuras investigaciones sobre este taxon emblemático de México.

Abstract: Twelve pine species naturally occur in the state of Hidalgo, of which, Pinus pinceana and P. greggii are listed as threatened. In this context it is necessary to generate information for Pinus species identification specially for immature individuals without seed cones. In this study we establish an identification key based on leaf anatomy for the identification of pine species occurring in the state of Hidalgo. Specimens from different localities were collected from which, permanent slides were prepared from transverse leaf sections and a character matrix was codified from leaf anatomy features and analyzed with UPGMA. The matrix was used to construct an identification key. The key allow for the identification of 10 out of the 12 species, including Pinus greggii a species under risk category. Pinus cembroides can only be differentiated from P. pinceana when it exhibits a semicircular shape in transverse section. External resin canals were only observed in Pinus subgenus Strobus and septal resin canals were only recorded for P. oocarpa. The number of resin canals may only be used as complementary for identification because of its high variation. UPGMA analysis generated two principal clusters, the first group included two interior clusters corresponding with subgenus Strobus species and subgenus Pinus species, the second principal cluster included only species from subgenus Pinus. This study contributes with a robust identification key for pine species at a local scale exclusively using secondary leaf anatomy characters.

Resumen: En el estado de Hidalgo se distribuyen, naturalmente, 12 especies de pinos, de las cuales, Pinus pinceana y P. greggii están clasificados en categorías de riesgo. En este contexto es necesario generar información para la identificación taxonómica de Pinus, únicamente con base en caracteres anatómicos de acículas en individuos jóvenes que carecen de estróbilos femeninos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue establecer una clave dicotómica para la identificación de pinos de Hidalgo, a partir de su anatomía foliar. Se recolectaron ejemplares en diversas localidades, se obtuvieron cortes transversales de las acículas, con ellos se codificó una matriz de caracteres, la cual fue sometida a un análisis de similitud UPGMA; y se elaboró una clave taxonómica. Se logran diferenciar 10 de los 12 taxones, que incluyen a Pinus greggii, especie bajo categoría de riesgo. Pinus cembroides se diferencia de P. pinceana, solo cuando la forma de la acícula, en corte transversal, es semicircular. Los canales resiníferos externos se observaron solamente en individuos del subgénero Strobus; y los septales en P. oocarpa. El número de canales resiníferos es utilizado de manera complementaria para identificar, debido a su alta variación. El análisis UPGMA resultó en dos agrupaciones principales, en la primera se recuperaron dos subgrupos correspondientes a las especies del subgénero Strobus y del subgénero Pinus; en la segunda pertenecen al subgénero Pinus. Se concluye que la clave es robusta para la identificación de especies de pinos a escala local, exclusivamente mediante caracteres anatómicos foliares.
